Educator Self-Awareness / Critical reflection for GCE

Educator Self-Awareness / Critical reflection for GCE

Critical GCE highlights the importance of learners reflecting upon their own knowledge and assumptions, and “exploring the implications of their own ways of seeing and being in the world in relation to power, relationships, and the distribution of labour and resources”
Blackmore, 2016, p.39

Core to this is planning and creating learning environments that scaffold continued and critical self-reflection – where learners are provided with opportunities to reflect and build upon their own experiences and social contexts to develop their knowledge and understanding.

Within this area we consider:

Fostering TE self-awareness in the context of critical GCE and social justice education. TEs engaging in reflective practices that illuminate their capacities and challenges in integrating critical GCE into their pedagogical repertoire; becoming aware of personal unconscious bias, values, and belief systems within themselves along with insecurities (complexities); separate personal aspects of self, from the values of critical GCE, and the professional self; explore ways of integrating personal self with professional self in a healthy way.
The discourse of ‘critical reflection’ is often posited as a key facet of the reflective practice process and indeed GCE – yet how is this occurring in ITE at present?
Do we need to reconsider and reconceptualise how we think about, teach, and use reflective practice mechanisms in initial teacher education?
How can we support TEs/PSTs to explore prior experiences and ideas rigorously, responsibly, and honestly?
How can we create learning environments where reflective practice modalities incorporate and present a space where students can articulate, clarify and challenge their values and assumptions and those of others?
