IPP1: Exploring development themes through the use of talk in the classroom (dialogic teaching)
[relevant to English, CSPE, Modern Languages]

Second reading & feedback

Following the first reading, we used the discourse (semiotics) of film to scaffold our next reading. We choose from the following:

  • Colour and Costumes
  • Settings and Prop
  • Images and Freeze Framing
  • Music and Soundtrack
  • Actions, Gestures and Expressions
  • Transitions and Contrasts
  • Three Most Important Lines
  • Obvious Symbols or Symbolic Motifs
  • Use of the Camera

We asked individual students (this could be done in pairs/groups) to focus on one of the above categories or 'lenses' in watching the film for the second time. We mapped their responses onto the whiteboard, creating the world of the girl as the students saw it.
